Food donation services adaptThe Community Networks food bank is still open for anyone struggling to afford food.

Wanaka’s food donation services are adapting their services to the country’s alert levels.

Food for Love, a not-for-profit initiative that provides meals for local people in need, is calling for local volunteers at alert level three when it will be able to operate again.

The alert level for all of New Zealand outside of Auckland will be reviewed tomorrow afternoon (Friday August 27).

Founder Bex Sarginson said it’s tough understanding why Food for Love doesn’t fall under the ‘emergency services’ bracket in level four, but she and her team of volunteers are ready to “get straight back into it at level three.”

Two large new donations means Bex is now putting the call out for more volunteers.

“We’ve got a thousand venison sausages arriving that have been donated to us and an equal amount in beef,” Bex said.

Food for Love founder Bex Sarginson said the organisation is looking for volunteers willing to cook at alert level three.

Bex said the organisation was looking for volunteers to help cook meals, whether it is a one-off or regular contribution, “especially [people who will cook] from home,” she told the Wanaka App.

Meanwhile, Wanaka’s food bank continues to operate at alert level four and its doors are open.

When people visit the food bank they take part in a brief interview to determine their financial and social situation, after which they are supported to create a food parcel.

They will need to wear a mask and sign in with the Covid-19 tracer App when they visit, Upper Clutha LINK food security project manager Daisy Watford said.

“We would like to remind members of the public that our service is available to anyone who is struggling to afford food at this time,” Daisy said.

The food bank is open on Mondays 1pm-4pm, Wednesdays 11am-2pm and Fridays 9am-12pm at the Wanaka Community Hub, located at 34 McDougall Street.
