Fire-affected family ‘overwhelmed’ with support A fire investigator was still on site on Monday evening.

The Wanaka family whose home was destroyed by fire early this morning has been overwhelmed by community support.

A family home on Totara Terrace was destroyed, and a neighbouring house, owned by another member of the family, was severely damaged in the fire.

Local emergency services responded to the blaze just after 3:00am but everyone inside managed to safely escape and take refuge at the neighbouring Wanaka Primary School.

“They are all safe and have somewhere to stay with family,” a member of the extended family told the Wanaka App.

She said the family had been “overwhelmed” with support, which included meals from Food For Love, offers of clothing and household goods, and other donations.

“They are all incredibly grateful for the support,” she said.

At least six children escaped the fire.

There were at least six children in the household, aged between one and 15-years-old.

The Wanaka Skate community came together and donated skateboards and helmets for the children. The young people are part of the local skate community, and they lost their own skate gear in the fire.

The family member said the family is now taking things “one day at a time”. This afternoon they farewelled a family dog who died in the blaze.

“At the end of the day I’m just grateful we’re not mourning people,” she said.

Nearby resident John Brake said he watched in awe as the flames engulfed the home.

“I was hoping that no-one was hurt. We could hear glass breaking and dull thuds which sounded like mini explosions. You could feel the heat and see smoke, ash and sparks flying high into the air.”

A Fire Emergency NZ spokesperson told the Wanaka App it was too soon to comment on the cause of the fire. A fire investigator was still at the scene this evening.

If people wish to offer help, they can contact Community Networks, which is coordinating donations. A Givealittle page has also been set up.
