Unprecedented demand at the Wanaka Food Bank this year is one of the reasons behind a Community Networks review of how it gathers food for the service.
Community Networks Wanaka manager Kate Murray said about 80 food parcels were given out last month, compared to an average of 23 per month last year, attributed to the economic effects of COVID-19.
The organisation has decided to cancel its annual December Food Bank Drive and focus on restocking the food bank throughout the year.
Kate said while most people who donate to the food bank do so in the lead up to Christmas, there is demand for food parcels year-round.
People referred for a food parcel receive a box of non-perishable staple items from the food bank and a supermarket voucher to buy fresh food.
There will still be festive treats for people referred for a Christmas hamper and food parcel this Christmas, Kate said. They will receive a supermarket voucher to choose their own Christmas food, a box of staples from the food bank and gifts donated by local businesses.
Instead of running the drive, Community Networks will focus on stocking the food bank year round, manager Kate Murray said.
Want a way to help the food bank?
"Cash donations are extremely helpful and much appreciated," Kate said. "They enable us to restock the food bank when essential items run out, and they contribute to the supermarket vouchers we give people for fresh food."
Another way to help is by putting non-perishable food in the baskets at the supermarket or dropping it off at the hub.
Nikki McKay, who has been the food bank drive organiser for many years, said the change made sense.
"We're a growing community and, with that, comes increasing demand for social services. We need a fully stocked food bank year-round to help meet that need.”
The food bank drive started in Wanaka in 2007 and Kate thanked everyone who has helped make the drive a success.
"The organisers, the fire brigade and other volunteers, and everyone who has given food - thank you so much and I really hope we can rely on your continued support of the food bank."
People wanting to support the food bank can make a cash donation via Community Networks' Givealittle page, or by contacting Community Networks directly by emailing [email protected] or calling 03 443 7799.
New World Three Parks is also currently running a fundraising campaign for the food bank. Until mid-December customers can add a donation to the food bank to their grocery bill at the checkout.
