After last year’s hugely successful event, Wastebusters and Plastic Free Wanaka are again co-hosting the Waste Free Fair, an afternoon of zero waste inspiration.

The third annual fair will be held on Saturday July 18 at the Lake Wanaka Centre.

At the event there will be a variety of waste-free products up for sale, as well as advice, inspiration, and practical demonstrations - such as beeswax wrap making - to help people reduce, reuse and upcycle.

There will also be competitions to enter, prizes to win, tasty food to buy, and an updated copy of the Wanaka Waste Free Shopping Guide, and activities for kids.

“We weren't sure the fair was going to happen this year so we’re really excited that we can all get together and have some zero waste fun,” Wastebusters project manager Sophie Ward said.

“It’s getting easier and easier in Wanaka to avoid single use plastics and the fair is a great chance to learn and get inspired by all of the fantastic Wanaka people helping us to live with less waste.”

The 2019 fair attracted more than 350 people and organisers said there had been a big increase in interest in living more sustainably.

There’s also entertainment for all ages: the Waste Free Wanda Singalong will also take place at the Lake Wanaka Centre from 11am to 12pm. Join ‘Wanda’ for some interactive songs, dancing and inspiration, learn how to combat single use plastic and protect the environment. Tickets to the singalong are $5 for the whole family.

Sophie said funding from the Waste Minimisation Fund had helped Wastebusters to put on the Waste Free Fair for the community.

“Everyone pays a waste levy of $10 per tonne when they take rubbish to the landfill. We’re stoked that it’s helping to support our community to make less waste, especially less single-use plastics.”

The Waste Free Fair will be held at the Lake Wanaka Centre from 1pm to 4pm on Saturday July 18. Gold coin entry.
