Crimeline

Hi again and what an awesome week it’s been weather wise.

I have a friend who was skiing good spring snow on Saturday morning then sailing a yacht on the lake in the same afternoon. What a location we have here.

Sadly, not everything is lovely and there is still harm in our communities and on our roads. Here are a few of the jobs we attended.

We have charged a male with cultivating and supplying drugs to Wānaka locals including several youths.

There was a serious assault that happened at a local workplace this week that we are investigating.

We dealt with some disorder on Tenby Street on Friday night involving alcohol and hot tempers.

I am sure you can see there are two common factors in all of the above jobs. Alcohol and/or drugs.

We attended a number of family harm matters last week including one where the harm has been going on for a long time. If you or someone you know is a victim of family harm please come to see us.

We impounded a vehicle that had been driven by a disqualified driver and wrote some large speeding tickets including a professional driver who lives here travelling at 80km/h in a 40km/h area.

On Saturday we were alerted to two overdue climbers in the Mount Aspiring National Park. One climber fell and broke his ankle. Wānaka SAR were called and responded, locating the male and he was airlifted back to Wānaka where he was delivered to St John. Thank you to our many SAR volunteers for their ongoing efforts.

Make sure to be well prepared for the likely conditions as the mountain weather changes very quickly and we often have people caught out and in trouble. Our mountains and rivers are unforgiving.

Cardrona Alpine Resort's winter season is completed and hopefully people enjoyed their time on the snow. I know I did, but on now with sunny weather and warmer temperature

activities.

Be mindful and responsible on the lake. Remember that some of our youths have sailing training most afternoons in a small part of the lake. Give them plenty of room. The rules are for motorised craft to be below 5 knots within 100 metres from other craft. Also, power craft give way to sail craft. If you want to know what 5 knots feels like come for a brisk walk with me and I’ll show you.

Lastly an impairment check on Sunday night netted one local drink driver. The popular question was “you do this on a Sunday night?”. Sure do, because every night is safer with impaired drivers off the road.

Be courteous, be kind, help someone if you get the chance.

Have a great week Wānaka and see you out there.
