Crimeline: Disorder, fraudsters, and ‘antisocial driving’Wānaka Police Senior Sergeant Fiona (Fi) Roberts

Police in Wānaka have dealt with a youth disorder incident, speeding, drink driving, antisocial driving and cannabis use over the past week.

They responded to a “disorder incident involving five youths at the lakefront” on Sunday (August 17), Wānaka Police Senior Sergeant Fiona (Fi) Roberts said.

“All the youths have been identified,” she said.

“Enquiries are ongoing as to allegations of assault and threatening behaviour.”

A few days earlier, two people were caught smoking cannabis in the New World Wānaka carpark.

That same day (Thursday August 14), a 49-year-old man was trespassed from the Albert Town Campground, Fi said.

Wānaka Police had assisted with “conducting two warrants in Wānaka in relation to a serious $1M fraud/scam”, Fi said.

Andrew Stewart Jones and Sepiuta Setaita Vave were arrested last Thursday (August 14) for allegedly swindling more than $1M in an elaborate cancer fraud scheme.

“The offenders have been charged with obtaining by deception charges,” Fi said. “The matter is before the courts.”

Police also dealt with speeding incidents, with one driver caught driving at 100kph in a 60kph zone and another driving 139kph in a 100kph zone.

In other driving incidents, police stopped a woman and discovered she was already disqualified from driving; a man who was observed driving erratically through a roundabout and was found to have been drinking; and police received reports of “antisocial driving behaviour in Hāwea over the weekend”.

“It is fortunate that no property was damaged as a result. Police encourage anyone who witnesses antisocial behaviour to report it,” Fi said.

“To that point, if anyone has any CCTV footage which could help identify the vehicles involved in Hāwea over the weekend, Police would be grateful if you contact us.”

Fi said police received a report of an overdue ski touring party [Tuesday August 12] in the Mt Brewster area.

“Fortunately, this was resolved when the subjects returned at about 7.30pm safe and well,” she said.

“We urge people heading out into our alpine environs to check the forecast, know sunset hours, have a plan and have a reliable form of communication.”

Fi said snow, ice and black ice are present after the front that passed through on Monday (August 18).

She reminded motorists to drive to the conditions, carry chains and know how to fit them.
