‘Create for Dementia’ for JuneActively creating art can improve the quality of life for people living with dementia.

June was ‘Create for Dementia Month’ for Alzheimers NZ, an initiative seeking to raise funds through encouraging people to create.

The Aspiring Wanderers, an activity group for people with mild to moderate dementia living in the Upper Clutha Community, were busy creating artworks for the campaign at their weekly sessions.

Some of the works are on display at the Wānaka Community Hub.

Evidence indicates that creating visual art can not only help prevent dementia, but also enhance the wellbeing of those who are living with the condition, Robyn Brighouse of Alzheimers Otago - Wānaka said.

Members of the Aspiring Wanderers have been busy creating art.

Regular activity involving artistic creativity can increase brain plasticity which is believed to protect against the development of Alzheimer’s disease or other types of dementia.

“Creating art involves many parts of the brain as we see, move, feel, think, and organise in the process,” Robyn said.

“For people living with dementia, research indicates that actively creating art can improve their quality of life by fostering increased self-worth, communication, interest, and joy. Also, the most enjoyment comes from the process of creation, rather than focussing on the outcome.”

She said the artworks produced by the Aspiring Wanderers during the programme have been inspiring and all participants have enjoyed the process of active participation.

Donating to the campaign will help support Alzheimers NZ and Alzheimers Otago to provide continued services in this region.
