Crate Day alcohol safetyDrinking alcohol will be banned in Queenstown tomorrow for Crate Day.

Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) has issued a reminder that a permanent alcohol ban exists in parts of Wānaka and Hāwea.

The reminder is timed to coincide with Crate Day which is on today across the country.

Crate Day takes place on the first Saturday of December, celebrating the start of summer, and the name comes from the tradition of sharing a crate at the beach or alongside a BBQ.

An alcohol ban is in place in Queenstown today (Saturday November 4) during Crate Day.

QLDC created an annual alcohol ban for Crate Day in Queenstown after risky and antisocial behaviour during the 2016 Crate Day.

“While this specific ban doesn't apply to Wānaka, there is a year round alcohol ban in parts of Wānaka from 8.00pm to 8.00am everyday,” QLDC said in a statement.

In Wānaka the area covered by the 8pm-8am ban includes the whole of the Lake Wānaka foreshore area from Sunrise Bay/Edgewater to Penrith Park; the area from the foreshore to an outer boundary formed by (and including) Meadowstone Drive, Stone Street, Golf Course Road, Macpherson Street, State Highway 84, and Ardmore Street.

In Hāwea it covers the foreshore area from Domain Road to Muir Road and from the foreshore to a boundary formed by Muir, Cemetery and Domain Roads.
