There are no new cases of COVID-19 in New Zealand today (Wednesday July 1) for the second day in a row.
Yesterday marked the first day since June 19 that there were no new cases reported.
Director-general of health Dr Ashley Bloomfield said all recent cases were in Kiwis returning home from overseas.
“Just to reiterate: There are no cases of community transmission,” Ashley said.
Of the 22 current cases one person remains in Auckland Hospital in a stable condition.
“Worldwide the number of cases continues to increase,” Ashley said.
He pointed to the recent surge in Victoria, Australia, where some lockdown measures are being reinstated in certain ‘hotspot’ suburbs.
“This is a reminder that community transmission in the future is a real possibility and may have to take local measures if it does occur,” Ashley said.
“We will be watching carefully.”
There were 4,530 tests completed yesterday and New Zealand passed a testing milestone of 400,000 tests, Ashley said.
He encouraged people to download the COVID-19 Tracer app and continue to take precautions like staying home if they are unwell.
