Part time Wānaka resident Corey Peters has won a gold medal at the Paralympic Winter Games in Beijing today.
Corey won gold in the Men’s Downhill Sitting in a time of 1:16.73. This is Coreys’ first Paralympic gold medal after winning silver in Sochi 2014 and bronze in PyeongChang 2018.
“That was obviously the major goal to finish off that set and come away with the gold medal and be on top of the box,” Corey said.
‘It’s an amazing feeling and I feel completely elated.”
Corey had a smooth, fast run, quick through the steep pitches and carrying his speed through the flats.
He took the lead from Norway’s Jesper Pedersen by the second intermediate and maintained it to the finish line.
Jesper finished in second place, 1.26 seconds slower than Corey, with Japan’s Tiaki Morii in third place.
Only fourteen of the twenty-five sit skiers completed the steep and technical course, showing just what an achievement Corey’s result is.
Corey resides in Wānaka when training at Cardrona Alpine Resort. He comes from New Plymouth.
Wanaka's Adam Hall finished 19th and his New Zealand team mate Aaron Ewen 11th in their respective downhill events.
