Construction industry faces confronting statisticsJustin Carnie (centre) with the MATES field officers.

The mounting pressure on the construction industry prompted a local company to host a breakfast for the building community last Wednesday (May 25).

The 80 attendees listened to representatives of MATES in Construction who highlighted some confronting statistics for the sector.

“This year our sector is facing unprecedented mental health challenges with the pressure being felt across most of the industry,” meeting organiser and CDL Building owner Justin Carnie said.

“The construction industry has the highest number of suicides across all industries in New Zealand and it is reported that we are losing nearly one person to suicide every week.”

Justin said the mounting pressure on people in the industry is caused by record housing demand, major supply chain shortages, extreme labour shortages and the impact of Covid-19 on labour availability.

“With all that’s happening, it is increasingly important that we as an industry align together and support each other through these challenging times,” he said.

“The amount of change and instability of building over the last 18 months has been difficult for many builders, especially smaller businesses where there is a lot less buffer room and margin for error.

“Yet it is these small businesses that form a critical part of our local community and building industry.”

Justin said he hoped by bringing people together and having the presentation by the MATES field offices communication would be opened for other companies in town that may be facing the same issues.

MATES in Construction is an organisation formed to reduce the number of lives lost to suicide in the construction industry. The focus of the meeting was to encourage workers to seek help when facing difficult situations, and to help them recognise the signs of suicidal thoughts in themselves and their mates.

If you or anyone you know wants to chat, Justin says he is always available (0275 444 154), in confidence, and can help with information regarding the MATES Programme.
