Colts open season with last-gasp winNo.8 Fletcher Craig with ball in hand supported by halfback Hamish Lowery.

A try from the last play of the game saw the Upper Clutha Colts rugby team claim a 12-10 win over the Dunedin Rugby Football Club Bulls on Saturday (May 7).

First-five Mitchell Evans scored with a pick-and-go to take the visiting team from a 7-10 deficit to the win at Dunedin’s Kettle Park.

It was the first game of the season for Wānaka’s U21 rugby team after last week’s game (scheduled to be played at home in Wānaka) had to be cancelled when the opposing side, Green Island, were unable to field a full squad.

The Colts conceded two tries during the match and struggled in the first half with handling errors letting the side down.

The breakthrough came after half time when lock Callum Grayling broke through a number of tackles to score in the corner, with winger Reilly Arnesen kicking the conversion.

The Colts continued to build pressure and were rewarded with the try on the final whistle.

The Wānaka side will be looking to back up their performance this Saturday (May 14) when they play the Kaikorai Valley Undertakers at the Upper Clutha Rugby Club. Kick off 12.45pm.
