Colts lose in shortened matchUpper Clutha’s Edward McGuckin carries the ball into contact

In a match that will be remembered for the weather rather than the rugby, the Upper Clutha Colts lost 34-7 against Kaikorai in Dunedin on Saturday (June 11).

Heavy rain, sleet and a cold southerly wind greeted the Colts as they took the field against the defending champions in their first round match of the top six Otago Championship Colts U21 competition.

Conditions were so bad the match was called off with ten minutes left to play.

In what was described as “a challenging game”, the Colts points came courtesy of a Camphell Harris intercept to score under the posts for Reilly Arneson to convert.

Kaikourai dominated play in the first half to lead 34-7 at the break. With weather conditions deteriorating neither side was able to add to their score in the shortened second spell.

Despite the loss the Colts are placed third in the competition with first round points carried forward.

This Saturday (June 18) they will be back in Dunedin to play second placed Dunedin Tigers at Kettle Park.
