Thousands of golf balls will fall from the sky later this term in one of Hāwea Flat School’s (HFS) favourite fundraisers.
The 2025 ‘Cloudy with a Chance of Golf Balls’ event will see numbered balls released from a helicopter onto a target, with prizes for the ones closest to the pin - and even for the one furthest away.
Ticket sales are now open and Friends of Hāwea Flat School, the organisers, hope to sell 2,500 tickets at $10 each.
First prize is $1,000, with $500 for second, $250 for third, plus 10 spot prizes, and the ‘furthest from target’ award.
“After costs and prizes, we expect to raise approximately $21,500 for our students,” Friends of Hāwea Flat School said in a statement.
“Funds raised will go towards upgrading the school pool, which is an asset that is loved by the wider community.
“On a warm summer’s afternoon, the school can be a hive of activity with people making the most of our wonderful school grounds, our incredible bike park - the recipient of the last golf ball drop - and the school pool.”
The group said they would like to make the experience “even better” by upgrading fencing, seating areas and changing rooms at the pool.
The ‘drop’ will take place on October 17 at the latest.
The helicopter and pilot have both been generously donated by Wānaka Helicopters.
A wide range of businesses and individuals have provided additional donations.
Tickets are available through students, at Wānaka’s New Worlds, and via the school’s KINDO app.
“A huge thank-you in advance to our local sponsors and families helping to make this event a success,” Friends of Hāwea Flat School said.
