Designed as a hub for local activities and events, the facility will provide space for a wide range of community groups and services, benefiting more than 400 people each week, the Central Lakes Trust (CLT) announced this week.
CLT has approved a grant of $500,000 towards the construction of the facility.
“We’re excited about what this new space will mean for our community,” Hāwea minister Aaron Johnstone said.
“It’s designed to be modern and flexible, a place where people can come together, connect, and grow.”
Just a year ago, Aaron told the Wānaka App the Hāwea congregation had “outgrown” its historic Hāwea Flat church, St Ninians.
“We’re selling St Ninian’s as a part of our process to build a new church within the Longview subdivision [at Lake Hāwea],” he said.
“Although we’ve outgrown the space, we remain committed to honouring the vision of our founders and continuing to serve the community.”

Lake Hāwea is also served by the community-owned Lake Hāwea Community Centre. The centre is the hub for activities - from meetings, sports, and cultural activities - and serves as a community emergency hub during times of need.
