A “gesture of goodwill” is what Christchurch International Airport Ltd (CIAL) is calling an annual commitment of $30,000 to the Tarras community.
The airport organisation says the money is available for community projects in the district each year.
“This is a no-strings attached contribution that will also sit outside any mitigation we may have to make if our project proceeds,” Christchurch Airport said in its February Tarras Airport project update.
Four members of the community have formed an establishment group to design the fund and decide its application and distribution processes.
“There is no requirement for members of the community committee [establishment group] or for fund recipients to support the airport project,” the airport’s statement read.
The establishment group members are Pete Jolly, Rachelle Haslegrave, Michelle Dacombe and Jonny Trevathan.
“We know this community well and will be able to ensure the fund is set up in a way that reflects Tarras’ values and that the money goes where it’s needed most,” Jonny said.
The group has decided the first distribution of funds will be $20,000 to the Friends of Tarras School.
In July 2020 Christchurch Airport revealed plans to develop a jet-capable airport on 750ha of land at Tarras, saying they had invested $45M which includes purchasing land bordered by State Highway 8 and 8A.
