Celebrating Wanaka’s young peopleKahu Youth worker Richard Elvey says altruism is an important part of child and youth development.

Do you know an 11 to 18-year-old from the Upper Clutha who has gone out of their way to do good, volunteer or be a generally awesome person in the community?

If so, make sure to nominate them for the upcoming Kahu Youth Volunteer Awards.

“This is our sixth annual Youth Awards to celebrate the awesome work done by the youth of the Upper Clutha District,” a Kahu Youth representative said.

The awards ceremony is being organised by the Upper Clutha Youth Council and will be held at Rippon Hall on December 3.

Award categories are divided into ages 10-11, 12-13, 14-15 and 16-18. There will also be a ‘supreme winner’ who can come from any age category.

Base NZ and Paper Plus have each part-sponsored this year’s event, with $75 Base NZ vouchers for each category winner in the 12 to 13-year-old section and older, and a $75 Paper Plus voucher in the 10 to 11-year-old category.

The supreme winner will get to skydive with Skydive Wanaka.

Skydive Wanaka has donated a skydiving experience for the 2020 supreme winner.

Kahu Youth worker Richard Elvey said the annual awards celebrated “the awesome work done by the youth of the Upper Clutha district”.

“The aim of these awards when we started was to showcase all that is good with the local young people, as often it is only the bad decisions that make it into the press or social media, such as the Upper Clutha Trading Post,” he said.

“It's so important to recognise the good deeds of anyone, but particularly young people. Altruism is a really important part of child and youth development.”

If you know someone that has done good in the community, nominate them by emailing [email protected], downloading a nomination form from the Kahu Youth website or picking up a nomination slip at the Mount Aspiring College student office.

Please include the nominee's name, age, gender, contact details and a description of what they have done.
