Wanaka’s Campbell Wright has been offered a wild card invite to two Biathlon World Cup events in March. The invitation follows outstanding results for the 18-year-old at International Biathlon Union (IBU) Cups in Europe this year.

The IBU Cup sits below the World Cup series but several World Cup competitors have been competing in IBU Cup events and Campbell has proved himself in this field.

His IBU Cup races included an outstanding fifth place in a 15km event in a field of more than 150 competitors in Arber, Germany. His shooting was outstanding, and he then qualified for the Open European Championships, but his real strength is his X-Country skiing which benefited from a full NZ season at the Cardrona Valley's Snow Farm before arriving in Europe.

Campbell has made the decision to delay heading to tertiary studies to compete in Biathlon and X-Country skiing in Europe. He has based himself at Livigno, Northern Italy home of his coach Luca Bormilini who he has worked with for the past eight years.

Campbell’s next events are:

  • Biathlon World Championships 9-21 Feb 2021 Pokljuka Slovenia
  • IBU Cup 15-21 Feb Osrblie Slovakia
  • FIS X-Country World Champs 22 Feb-7 March Oberstdorf Germany
  • Biathlon Junior World Championships 24 Feb-7 March Obertilliach Austria

By wild card Invitation from IBU he will then compete in two Biathlon World Cup events.

  • IBU World Cup 8-14 March Nove Mesto Czechia
  • IBU World Cup 16-21 March Holmenkollen Norway

When in New Zealand Campbell trains at the Snow Farm. He was the New Zealand flag carrier for the New Zealand team at the Youth Olympic Winter Games last year.
