Another local has lent their support to the idea of changing the name of Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC).
WUCCB second-term member Chris Hadfield and QLDC councillor Cody Tucker recently pitched the idea of changing the name to reflect that the district includes Wānaka, Hāwea, Luggate and all of the Upper Clutha.
Speaking at Thursday's (November 30) WUCCB meeting, Heart of Wānaka member Andrew ‘Howie’ Howard said he wanted to “keep the conversation going”.
“Other councils do not typically take the name of a town in their district,” he said. “It’s not the Alexandra District Council or Nelson District Council.”
“I do believe this creates perceptions in our community and the way we are dealt with.”
Howie said he would like to see the council adopt a name “that reflects our entire district”.
“When I saw the WUCCB had brought it up I thought this was a good time to create a bit of momentum.”
Earlier this month Chris told the Wānaka App QLDC’s reaction to the proposal was to say it was “too hard, too expensive, and the process too long”.
But there would probably never be a good time, so “why not now?” he said.
Options suggested have included Southern Lakes District Council, Alpine Lakes District Council, Aspiring District Council, or a Māori name.
WUCCB chair Simon Telfer thanked Howie for weighing in.
“It’s a broad and complex issue and it’s given us encouragement to continue that dialogue,” he said.
