The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) are making enquiries at the site of a helicopter crash which occurred on Tuesday (January 21).
There were no fatalities in the crash, which occurred 7.4km east of Gladstone, Lake Hāwea, around 3.30pm, but two people were hospitalised with injuries.
A representative from Maritime NZ Rescue Coordination Centre NZ (RCCNZ) said the organisation received an alert from an aircraft emergency location transmitter.
“RCCNZ contacted the helicopter operator, who advised that the helicopter had experienced a hard landing, injuring both the pilot and passenger,” the spokesperson said.
“RCCNZ tasked the Queenstown Rescue Helicopter to the location and the rescue helicopter transported the injured persons to Dunedin Hospital for treatment.”
Two CAA staff members were sent to Wānaka yesterday (Wednesday January 22) following the incident, a CAA spokesperson said.
They are making initial inquiries, the spokesperson said.
“We have staff on site and enquiries will continue over coming days to determine what happened, and next steps.”
A police representative said the police were notified of the incident but later stood down because the RCCNZ was the lead agency.
