The organisers of local events to commemorate fallen soldiers have put out a plea for help as ANZAC Day looms.
A committee of just three people organises the services in Wānaka for ANZAC Day, Armistice Day and Poppy Day.
“These are such important days; what happens if we don’t have anyone to organise it?” Commander Lyal Cocks (RNZN Rtd) said.
“I’ve got to try and attract some people to get involved and help organise things.”

Lyal said it was important the days are acknowledged and while it was a big task for three people, a few more people helping to organise the events would mean a lighter load and ensure longevity.
This year the committee has organised stands around Wānaka for Poppy Day (April 21) and organised next Tuesday’s ANZAC Day service in Wānaka.
Lyal said a separate committee is organising Lake Hāwea’s ANZAC Day service.
The Wānaka service will be held at the lakefront adjacent to the town centre at 7am on Tuesday with piper Clifford Hiscoke playing. The service will consist of the New Zealand and Australian national anthems, the last post, and a short speech.
At 9.30am a service will be held at the Lake Wānaka Centre led by the reverend Ian Hyslop, followed by a wreath laying ceremony at the cenotaph.
ANZAC Day services at Lake Hāwea are organised by the Hāwea District ANZAC Committee and the Hāwea Community Association.
The ceremony starts at 7am at the ANZAC Peninsula on the Lake Hāwea Dam, and includes local school pupils, a guest speaker, reading the Roll of Honour and the placing of crosses for the fallen.
