Coming off a first place finish in Central Otago, the Te Kura o Tittea Mount Aspiring College (MAC) hockey team took their skills on the road to participate in the South Island Mixed Tournament in Oamaru last week.
To get to the final against St Peters, MAC defeated Wakatipu in a rematch which was called the most exciting game of the season (5-2), before a final, decisive match scored them the competition.
The final game against St Peters began with high intensity and dominance from MAC after coach James Adams encouraged everyone to stick to the game plan and always play as a team.
Hugh Ragg scored midway through the first quarter from great passing play and there were a number of opportunities leading up to the second goal of the game scored by Georgia Chrisp in the second quarter.
MAC continued to control the game through the midfield, with the occasional attack from St Peters being met by the stoic MAC defence.
In the third quarter the subs were rolling quickly to keep the energy levels high, which paid off with two MAC goals scored in quick succession.
The first goal was unofficially scored by Georgia Chrisp, but with a mass of people around the net it was tough to see, and Hugh Ragg finished it off and officially scored the point.
The second goal of the quarter was scored in a penalty corner by Kynan Marsh, who celebrated in style having scored against his old team.
Going into the final quarter with a score line of 4-0, MAC still needed to concentrate and focus on their game.
St Peter's came out showing determination and played strong hockey, scoring two good goals.
This nudged MAC back into action and they returned to their attacking play which resulted in Thomas Benson scoring from a set play at a penalty corner.
A score of 5-2 in a final is a very convincing win and is indicative of the level of hockey at which the players from MAC played throughout the season and the tournament.
