$15K support for young snowsport athletes Former Grassroots recipient Gustav Legnavsky training for halfpipe in Europe.

Seventy-nine Wanaka Snowsports Club (WSC) Grassroots recipients will receive monetary assistance with their snowsports pursuits this year.

The club has announced its Grassroots funding decisions for the 2021 winter season, which totals $15,250.

The funding helps families with the cost of snowsports improvement for children in years 2-8.

“The Wanaka Snowsports Club is very excited to announce and provide grants for our local ski community and can't wait to see them out on the slopes with their coaches,” WSC said in a statement.

Because the club received so many applications this year it decided to create two tiers of funding, with tier one recipients receiving $250 of support and tier two receiving $100.

The money is paid directly to Cardrona-Treble Cone to pay for the snowsports improvement lesson the recipient is enrolled in, WSC explained.

Since 2013 WSC has distributed a total of almost $100K for the programme.

The club has helped produce Olympians, World Cup competitors, New Zealand champions and athletes who compete at all levels around the world.
