WAI Wānaka is a community-led organisation working to accelerate action for the health of our fresh water. Right now, our deep alpine lakes are in crisis, facing threats from invasive species, pollution, and climate change. Our work is urgent, and we need your help to turn the tide.

If you're looking for a fresh start in the New Year and want to make a truly meaningful impact, we are looking for two passionate team members to join our mission. This is your chance to contribute to the health of our waterways and inspire others to act.

Community Activator

Are you ready to inspire and mobilise our community to protect the environment? In this role, you will:

• Engage and educate: Create exciting events, citizen science opportunities, and interactive learning experiences for all ages.
• Empower young minds: Deliver positive, hands-on learning experiences to early education centres and schools, sparking a lifelong connection to nature.
• Build connections: Help our community reconnect with and care for our unique ecosystems.

While experience in education, outreach, environmental programmes, or environmental science is a plus, it’s not essential. What is essential is being an inspiring, passionate people person who is confident speaking to diverse groups, including tamariki and rangatahi.

Communications Specialist

Are you a talented communicator with a passion for creating change? In this role, you will:

• Deliver our communications strategy: Produce high-quality content, including images, text, reels, and compelling storytelling, across social media, newsletters, press releases, presentations, and promotional materials.
• Support our fundraising goals: Craft engaging fundraising communications to inspire donors.
• Manage our online presence: Oversee our website and media relations to build awareness and engagement.

Previous experience delivering engaging and effective communications for diverse audiences is essential. A bachelor’s degree in environmental science, communications, or a related field is desirable, as is experience working in the not-for-profit sector. Above all, a deep passion for solving environmental problems and driving behaviour change is key.

About the Roles

Both roles are full-time with flexibility in work schedule available. Part-time and Job-sharing options will be considered for the right candidates.
