Queenstown Airport Corporation (QAC) operates two of the world’s most scenic airports – Queenstown and Wānaka - which connect the stunning Southern Lakes region of New Zealand with the world. 


QAC manages the Wānaka Airport under a Management Services Agreement (MSA) for the owner Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC). The Wānaka Airport Safety Coordinator supports the QAC Safety Manager in developing and implementing safety systems and procedures at Wānaka (WKA) airport.


The Safety Officer supports the continuous improvement in safety by influencing operators, stakeholders, contractors and the aviation community to engage and actively participate in delivering best practice safety performance through effective communications, training, advice and support.

Working an average of 40 hours per week including weekends.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for building and implementing internal and external stakeholder communications and engagement plans at Wānaka to ensure a collaborative approach to delivering positive safety and compliance outcomes.
  • Supporting the development, implementation, monitoring and continuous improvement of QAC’s safety management system at WKA.
  • Responsible for leading and/or participating in the completion of timely and robust incident investigation processes, including ICAM investigations.
  • Support the Safety Manager and Senior Manager Compliance in coordinating with CAA in the preparation and delivery of external compliance audits.
  • Responsible for establishing robust reporting at WKA to support and guide corrective and improvement actions

To hit the ground running you’ll need…

  • A pro-active, can-do attitude with a calm and affable personality
  • Experience in the General Aviation (Pilot, Trainer, Safety) sector or aviation industry (Airways, Airline, Airport, CAA etc) with a good understanding of airfield safety.
  • To be comfortable actively and independently managing own workload and proactively identifying priority areas
  • A high level of initiative and accountability in making things happen
  • ICAM qualifications and/or experience in leading investigations, including dealing with external agencies where necessary.
  • Preferably a sound knowledge and understanding of Civil Aviation rule Part 139 and ICAO Annex 14.
  • Uncompromising in attention to detail and record keeping.
  • To have a connection to the Wānaka/Queenstown Lakes District would be preferable.

You will need

  • NZ residency/citizenship or a valid NZ work visa
  • To be able to pass Ministry of Justice, security checks and a pre-employment drug and alcohol test
